Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
03/01/2012
My name is José David Gil Damián. I’m twenty three years old and I come from the city of Santiago, Dominican Republic. I’m a graduate student from the “Instituto Iberia” and “La Escuela de Diseño de Altos de Chavón” with the Academic Excellence Award, Magna Cum Laude, and a GPA of 3.8.
The reason I’m writing to you is because this year I decided to launch myself to all the imaginable places in search of accomplishing my all time dream, study in the United States. I’ve tried to achieve this goal for several years now, but I have not being able to because of financial circumstances and lack of resources.
During the past six years, I’ve been accepted in three of the ten most prestigious universities of art in the world. This year I was accepted to the “California College of the Arts” in the Fine Arts/Illustration program. I was awarded the “Creative Achievement Award” in which I will be granted $11,000 dollars per year; this is the equivalent of $44,000 dollars in 4 years. This award is given to the best portfolio and academic record among all the international students making me also the first Dominican ever to get accepted at this prestigious university.
Years before I was accepted at “Parsons, The New School of design” and “ The Rhode Island School of Design” but for the high cost I had to deny my acceptance and stay in the country waiting for other opportunities to come, but they never did. I fear that art in general as the heart of every culture is highly underappreciated in my country. Another fact is that it isn’t a mystery to anyone, how expensive these colleges are in the United States and I can’t afford it by myself. So I decided to go on a mission: This is why I’m writing to you now. I’m looking for sponsors interested in helping me reach my all time goal to develop further my artistic skills and the chance to achieve my college experience, one I have dreamed to get all my life. This has been a big challenge for me; but one I will not fear to try to get.
As for my academic achievements I was the student recipient of “The All Time Academic Excellence” award in high school while also being the valedictorian of my graduation. I was 3 times invited and recognized in the Presidential Palace with the presence of our President because of my achievements as a student. As for the School of design I was early accepted at the age of 17 being recognized for my academic and artistic achievements and graduated with the Communication design – Magna Cum Laude title; as well as an honorific student and highest GPA of my program.
My purpose in the pursuit of these sponsorships/scholarships (or a combination of both) is the simple desire to grow, not only as a student but as an artist and a human being. To take my professional growth in every imagined direction that I could have never afford to take by myself without this college experience. I want the limits of my dreams to be destroyed by my will to achieve this and get even beyond the dream-line and make it into a reality. I want you to know, that the mere thought of you taking your time to read this letter, is highly appreciated. If you or anyone you know, can help with my cause, please contact me on the email and phone number below.
The biggest of hugs and thank you for your time and i hope you like my poster!
Sincerely yours
José David Gil
